À propos

Smog Land

Rent: $53 a night. Ambition: free. Your first coworker: a mentor who texts you tips.

Four pots. One motel window. A whole town that needs to chill out.

From Motel Room 6 to Kingpin

You check into Room 6 of a small, hazy coastal town with four pots by a sunny window and a mentor named Dez already blowing up your phone.

Smog Land is a co-op weed-growing business sim: grow it, process it, sell it, and expand from a motel room to a dock-side export empire. Dez's story runs over seven acts, about 40 hours solo from Room 6 to your first export order, with a guided first day, short lessons as new things open up, and gold stars for the places you max out. Level 50 ends the story, not the game: after that come Legend stars and a visitor from space.

A Grow Op With Real Depth

Not a clicker. A garden with opinions.

  • Soil, coco, clay pebbles and hydro (DWC and RDWC). Hydro is faster and bigger, and also fussier
  • Grow tents from a cardboard box up to 240 cm, and a Light Lift that keeps the lamp at the right height
  • Lights from CFL and T5 up to LED, quantum boards, HPS and CMH
  • Humidity, temperature, fans, dehumidifiers, carbon filters and ducts
  • Feeding, pests, mildew and bud rot, plus topping, tying and defoliating
  • Cold frames and low tunnels for the field in winter, drip kits, a feed tank, cloning machines, gas generators and battery banks for the big grows
  • Power cables and fuse boxes. Overload the strip and it trips
  • More than 50 strains on a seed ladder from easy starters to bred legends (holiday and alien strains included), breeding and crossing, and a strain you register under your own name
  • The Seed Guy sells rare seeds, but only at night

Hand-Rolled, Hand-Twisted

Grind, pinch, roll, lick, twist the tips.
  • Harvest, hang to dry, cure in jars, trim and grind
  • Hand-roll joints over a rolling tray, or use a rolling table. Spill on the tray and you can sweep it back up; spill with no tray and it's gone
  • Blunts, cones, pre-roll boxes and joint packs
  • Hash, kief, rosin, edibles, vape carts and more
  • Bongs and rigs that level up as you do

Then Build the Line

Hands first. Machines when you can afford the cable. There are 24 of them, each opening at its own crew level.

  • Dry and cure: Drying Cabinet, Dry Tunnel, Curing Cabinet and Cure Locker
  • Trim and roll: Bowl Trimmer, Drum Trimmer, Joint Roller and Auto Roller
  • Pack: Scale & Seal and the Auto Packer
  • Extracts: Kief Tumbler, Sieve Cabinet, Bubble Washing Machine, Bench Freeze Dryer, Hash Wash Cabinet, Air Press, Auto Rosin Press, Bench Cart Filler and Cart Filling Station
  • Edibles: Convection Decarb Oven, Butter Infuser, Batch Kettle, Prep Bench and Gummy Depositor
  • Machines run off your cable grid, wear down and want a service. Staff hired as Trimmers, Packers and Kitchen hands can run them for you
  • The hands-on stations stay worth your time: a machine pays out less XP than doing the job by hand

Customers With Standards

  • Four customer tiers: Scrounger, Average Joe, Aficionado and High Roller. Better buyers need better grades, and below their line they won't buy at all
  • Regulars text you phone orders, and the gangs want bulk deals
  • Deliver by drone or courier, or open your own shop with registers, displays, merch and shoppers who judge your prices
  • Put your brand on tees, polos, hoodies, caps and rolling gear, and watch the town start wearing it

Stock Up at the Stores

Six walk-in stores, each laid out like the real thing. Grab a basket or push a cart down the aisles, pick things off the shelves and pay at the till.

  • Hank's Hardware: a tent village, a gantry of grow lights, and fit-out pods under dust sheets until your crew is ready for them
  • Green Thumb Garden Supply: the Seed Library, the Potting Shed, a garden court and a glasshouse lab
  • Smoke Signals: machine racks, a glass tower of bongs and rigs, and a gift corner of gull souvenirs
  • Pipe & Wire Supply: pallet racks, a cable dispenser and the trade counter
  • Kickflip Skates: a wall of decks, a ledge you can skate, and the holiday gear on its own bench
  • Ace Pawn: junk floor to ceiling, a guitar wall, a gun-free self-defence wall, and a bench for when you're broke

Open Your Own Shop

  • Lease the Main Street shop and fit it out with counter runs in three looks (Thrift, Standard and Boutique), displays, registers and decor
  • The look you pick tilts who walks in. Thrift pulls bargain hunters, Boutique pulls people with money
  • Hire a cashier, stock the shelves and let shoppers judge your prices
  • Rent, buy and upgrade more places as you level: a kiosk, a field, a house with a basement, a lab, a mill unit and the Dock Warehouse, then run production lines and fill export contracts

Bet It All at the Lucky Gull

The Lucky Gull: a casino run by the Chip Gulls, open 8pm to 4am. The floor opens at crew level 24 and the Gold Room at 27. Play Twenty-One, the Gull Wheel, the Green Machines slots, Nine-Lives Dice, Hold'em, Craps and the Gull Derby, play Liar's Dice against a gang boss in the Gold Room, or bet on the Cannabis Cup. Every game is played at the table in 3D, the way you work the processing stations.

Simulated gambling. Fake money, no real money, ever. Nothing in the casino can be bought with real money, and nothing won there has any value outside the game. Every game posts its odds, the house keeps nightly loss limits, and you can ask to be kept out for a few days.

Contains simulated gambling with fictional in-game money only.

A Town That Actually Lives

  • A rebuilt seaside town of a few hundred residents, each with a name, a job, a schedule, a vibe and a trust level in you
  • Weather, seasons and a proper day and night (a game day is 24 real minutes) change what sells
  • A bus round town, and beds to sleep off the night
  • A phone full of apps for orders, the map, the market, the bank, your crew and more
  • Photo mode (press ]) with a free camera and filters, for the shots you want to keep
  • Make your own character, or keep your s&box avatar

Town Events

Night market, skate jam, beach bonfire, Cannabis Cup, a 4/20 street party and plenty more. Events change the crowd, and on 4/20 everyone is buying.

Smog Hollow and Smogsgiving

Holidays turn up on their real dates and dress the whole town.

  • Smog Hollow, 24 October to 7 November: Mort's Hollow Cart, Candy Skulls the whole crew shares, a pumpkin-orange new strain, a dressed-up town and Hollow Night on the 31st
  • Smogsgiving, the week round US Thanksgiving: Bev's Pie Cart, the Harvest Supper, the Turkey Bowl, Friendsgiving and new holiday strains

The Streets Have Owners

Eight gangs split the town between them, from the Dock Kings down by the water to the Gutter Gang's rats in the Underpass.

  • Earn their respect with odd jobs: run a bag, collect an envelope, tag a rival's wall, scrub one off or hold a corner
  • Meet the bosses at their hangouts, pay for protection, buy a week of peace, and pick a side when two crews go to war
  • Grow too loud and the smell gets out: the neighbours talk, the council sends an inspector, and the local gang drops by for a share
  • Getting caught out costs you money or product, never the game

Co-op: Run the Crew

Play solo, or share one crew bank and one set of levels with friends. Built for 1 to 4 players (friends-only and invite-only games take up to 8). Split the jobs: one grows, one rolls, one runs the counter, one does the gang's errands, one minds the machines.

  • Voice: hold V to talk to your crew in game
  • Public games: strangers join as Visitors, with no say over the bank or your places until you make them Members, and the host can kick or ban anyone from the Esc menu
  • Pause together: the world stops once everyone has paused
  • Controllers: controller support is experimental
  • Safe saves: every world keeps backups, and Load Game can put one back if a save goes wrong

Level 50 Is Not the End

  • Take your first Legend star at crew level 50, then vote as a crew on a perk: Deep pockets, Wingman, Extra hand, Second entry or Gold kit
  • Levels keep counting to 99, and the late levels pay out in cash and prizes
  • After the first star a saucer comes down on the beach at 21:30. Brix runs a stall at the crash site and sells for Glorbs, and five alien strains are waiting

FAQ

How long is it? About 40 hours solo from Room 6 to the first export order, over seven acts. A crew gets there faster. Then the Legend climb keeps going.

Do I need friends? No. Everything works solo. Co-op is there when you want it.

Can I skip the tutorial? Yes. Switch it off for that world in New Game.

Is there a game over? No. Bad luck and bad choices cost money, product or respect, but you always keep playing.

What about strangers in public games? They start as Visitors. Make them Members if you like them, or kick or ban them from the Esc menu.

I lost a save! Open Load Game: a damaged save offers Restore backup, and Backups lists every copy the game kept.

Do old saves still work? Yes. Your crew lands on the right act and mission, and missions you'd already done are ticked off.

Are machines better than doing it by hand? They are faster and they don't need you standing there, but a machine pays out less XP than the hands-on job.

Found a bug or have an idea? Press \ (backslash) in game, or pick Send feedback in the Esc menu. A report sends what you wrote, your player name, where you are and what you're doing in the game, and two screenshots (untick them if you like) to the team's Discord. Nothing else from your PC. You can also find us on Discord:

Known issues

  • s&box shows its own New Game screen first. Press New Game, then pick seats and who can join in Smog Land's menu
  • Public games are capped at 4 players for now
  • Controller support is experimental, and a few places may still need the mouse
  • Casino: bar regulars may sit a little high or low on their stools in some spots
  • Casino: the Gold Room's chips show your crew's colours as a badge over the chip rather than printed into it
  • Casino: the Dock Kings deck is the house deck in Kings blue for now
  • Casino: a Gold Room meet has no map waypoint yet, so the gang's text says where to go
  • Casino: with a gamepad, the reality check over a table may need the mouse to close
  • Some sounds (the train, fights, secrets, the Cup crowd) are placeholders, and Dez texts his lines until there's a recorded voice

  • Check before sending – a second step shows your report the way the developers will see it before you press Send
  • Pauses while you write – a solo world pauses while the report form is open, just like the pause menu
  • Delivery status – the form tells you if your report was sent, is queued or is with your host, and a thank-you toast pops up when it arrives
  • Offline retry – if you're offline or the server is busy, your report is saved on your PC and retried automatically until it goes through
  • Guest reports – in co-op, a guest who can't reach the developers directly sends their report through the host, and hears when it's gone out
  • Report limits – you can send one report every 20 seconds and up to 10 an hour, and the form tells you how long to wait
  • Controller support – works on a controller: LB/RB set the type, up/down the severity, Y swaps shots, X toggles them, A and B go on and back
  • Packs stack across harvests – bags, jars and joints with the same strain, size, grade and trim now stack, blending weight, quality, THC and cure
  • Stack on drop or Sort – dragging, Shift-moving or pressing Sort stacks matching packs, and a drag or Shift-move says how many were stacked
  • Split stacks – right-click a stack in your bag or hotbar to split it (starts at half), using a slider, +/-, quick picks, the wheel or typing
  • Shift-drag split – hold Shift and drag a stack onto another slot to choose how much of it goes there
  • Take one – Ctrl+click a stack to pick up one piece or gram, again for another, and right-click or Ctrl+click a slot to put one down
  • Split by the gram – loose bud, trim, kief, hash, rosin, moon rocks and infusions split by the gram, and both parts keep their strain and quality
  • Stash box splitting – right-click or press X on a stash box slot to pick how much to put in or take out; Ctrl+click or LT moves one
  • Controller splitting – in the bag, X splits a stack, LT takes one, RT still quick-moves, and B closes an open split picker first
  • Shelf stacking – shop shelves, stash boxes and work table joint slots stack same-grade packs too, and a topped-up shelf spot keeps its price
  • Register upgrade tip – the first ask each day for a size your register can't hold brings a tip naming the Hank's register that sells it
  • Unattended shop – if the last of your crew leaves the shop with shoppers still inside, everyone who runs it is warned they'll walk out
  • Paged home screen – the phone home screen now has pages, so every app is reachable at any window size instead of hiding under the dock
  • Page dots – dots under the apps show your page; turn with the wheel, a swipe, arrow keys, Page Up/Down, a dot or LB/RB, and red dots flag badges
  • Save notices – saves and autosaves now pop a toast, and in co-op guests get one too ("The host saved the world")

Improved

  • Funny resident names – townsfolk now have meme-worthy names like Couch-Lock Carl, Karen from Accounts and Grandma Greenthumb
  • Customer names – walk-in customers get names that suit their type, like Coupon Carol the bargain hunter and Butane Barry the dabber
  • Shoppers and staff – shoppers and job candidates get funny names too, like Forklift Frank, with no repeats in your shop or crew
  • Crooks and cops – shoplifters, gang members, escorts and police get funnier names, like Five-Finger Frank, Crouton and Officer Sprinkles
  • Gang contacts – gangs' phone contacts get new names like Chef Munchies or Two-Phones Tony, and no two gangs share a contact any more
  • Undercover stings – the suspiciously ordinary undercover cops at gang deals are now called things like Regular Rick and Normal Norman
  • Renamed gangs – four gangs have new names: Chip Gulls, Dean's List, Hilltop Hooligans and Minivan Mafia
  • Event hosts and lawyer – event hosts, stall keepers and inspectors get names like Party Marty and Inspector Nitpick; your lawyer is Justine Case
  • Store clerks – store clerks now show their name on the hover card and in chat bubbles, while the Seed Guy is still just the Seed Guy
  • Cannabis Cup rivals – some rival growers at the Cannabis Cup have new names, like Captain Kushbeard, Kelp Me Rhonda and Frosty the Dankman
  • Skye's new name – rival dealer Skye is now Skye "Big Clouds" Ramos
  • Long names fit – long names end in an ellipsis on the sale screen, chat bubbles, shop queue and worker name tags instead of breaking the layout
  • Demand follows the menu – shoppers mostly ask for sizes your register is set up for, not quarters, halves or jars a starter register can't sell
  • Staffed counter – new shoppers only come in while you or a crewmate is in the shop, or a shopkeeper or cashier is on shift there
  • Rating recovers overnight – a shop under 3.5 stars slowly recovers each night, with a "Word's fading" note in the shop log
  • Low ratings hurt less – a poor rating slows traffic less than before, so enough shoppers still come to win your reputation back
  • Shopper lines – shoppers now say when they settle for another size, or shrug it off when you don't sell what they asked for
  • Grade stays put – stacking packs never bumps a stack up or down a quality grade, so Premium stays Premium
  • Why it won't stack – when two packs refuse to stack, the message says why, like a different grade or strain, and shelf spots do the same
  • Mixed harvest labels – stacks from several harvests are labeled "mixed harvest", and packs of different weights show an average weight
  • Stash box details – stash box slots now show each pack's grade (plus "mixed" for mixed-harvest stacks) and the exact weight of loose weed
  • Lab-tested lots – a lab-tested lot only stacks with itself, and mixing harvests clears the lot so certificates can't carry over
  • Street-sale leftovers – what's left of a bag opened for a street sale goes back on its own, so your sealed eighth bags stay full
  • Batches stay separate – split-off weed merges back into its own batch, while a different batch or item is refused with a note and a red slot
  • Part on the cursor – while you carry part of a stack, the rest stays in its slot and the cursor shows the grams or pieces you're holding
  • Bag hints – the bag's help line and item details now explain splitting and taking one
  • Your own outfit – each player wears their own s&box avatar, and empty avatars or ones matching another player's get a different default outfit
  • Looks match names – NPCs, event-goers included, now dress to fit their name, with fitting hair, make-up, beards and outfits for women and men
  • Heights – women now come out a little shorter than men on average
  • Crew uniforms – gang crews, event staff, undercover cops and Detective Harlan wear their usual colors and uniforms, fitted to who wears them
  • Rival dealer looks – Celeste, Skye and Auntie Bev get hair, make-up and accessories that suit them, and the male rivals gain beards or glasses
  • Familiar faces – a regular caught shoplifting, or a friend visiting your lounge, now wears their usual clothes so you can tell who it is
  • Page turns – pages slide in with a short fade, and a swipe that's too short springs back
  • Roomier layout – apps spread evenly with tighter spacing, so a long weather line or a wide window no longer pushes icons under the dock
  • Waypoint strip – an active waypoint shows as a compact strip at the top of the home screen instead of taking a row of apps
  • Fold key hint – the fold button shows a small F key (keyboard and mouse) in place of the old "Press F to unfold" line
  • Remembers your page – backing out of an app returns you to the page you left, and tapping the home bar at home goes back to page one
  • Old saves carry over – residents in existing saves get new names but keep their job, home, friends, deals and tier, and orders follow along
  • Gang standing carries over – your respect and open deals with the four renamed gangs move over to their new names
  • Fresh start for shops – in existing saves, a shop rated under 3 stars is lifted to 3.0 under the new rules, with a note in the shop log
  • Stash boxes tidy up – loading a save combines stash box packs that can now stack
  • Neat joint line-up – joints you roll line up side by side on the tray, and when the row is full the oldest slides off to make room
  • Guest pause menu – guests see "Saved by the host" with the last save time, whose world it is, and that their cash, items and XP stay there
  • Autosave setting – the Autosave every setting now explains that in someone else's world the host's setting applies
  • Report key name – the F8 control is now listed as "Report a bug or idea (F8)"
  • Guide tips – the Guide now covers splitting, taking one, controller buttons, stacking packs across harvests and Report a bug in the Esc menu
  • Credits – game design, direction and testing are now credited to Peg Leg Tuna Toes
  • Fuller credits – the credits now cover the engine's characters, clothes, sounds, sky and water, plus the plants and textures made for Smog Land

Fixed

  • Ghost NPCs – townsfolk no longer turn into floating clothes with no body when they shelter from rain, leave an event crowd or a guest joins
  • Invisible staff – staff who were out on a run when a guest joined no longer stay invisible for that guest
  • Invisible players – your body and clothes always draw for other players, so you no longer vanish for friends when your camera pulls in close
  • Host leaves – when the host quits, guests are told the world closed and return to Smog Land's menu instead of getting a Disconnected message
  • Lobby settings – s&box's New Game screen no longer overrides your lobby, so solo games don't get 8 seats or the wrong name or privacy
  • Guest lobby info – a guest's pause menu now shows the lobby's real seat count and crew name instead of their own settings
  • Admin tools locked – the admin menu, fly mode and their hotkeys no longer work for regular players, even in a world they host
  • Console cheats locked – cheat commands like free cash or teleports only work for the developer, and dev settings reset for everyone else
  • Safer hosting – a host who isn't a developer can no longer run commands on your machine
  • Test Lab hidden – the developer-only Test Lab world is now hidden from regular players
  • Fairer rating – lost sales now count half, and a new shop's first few reviews nudge your rating instead of swinging it
  • No review for off-menu asks – a shopper asking for a size your register can't hold no longer leaves a bad review
  • Missing drawers – a shopper who leaves because you haven't set up a drawer for their size now leaves a milder review
  • Shop head count – the shop status shows how many shoppers are inside and how many are on the way, counting only those really inside
  • Naked host – the host and solo players now spawn fully dressed instead of appearing naked
  • Mismatched genders – NPCs no longer pair a woman's name with a man's look or the other way around
  • Lenny's shirt – rival dealer Lenny Two-Bags now wears his Hawaiian shirt instead of going shirtless
  • Rival looks – a rival dealer's appearance no longer changes between sessions
  • Cut-off home icons – the lower rows of home screen apps and the dock no longer slip under the bottom of the phone
  • Duplicate dock apps – Orders and Tasks, which live in the dock, no longer show up a second time in the app grid
  • Warehouse tabs – on the folded phone, the four Warehouse tabs now fit across the screen
  • Ops app – the Ops app now scrolls, so shop and place cards are no longer stuck under the bottom edge
  • Map and titles – the Map app's side list no longer overflows the folded phone, and long page titles end in an ellipsis
  • Joint placement – finished joints lie on top of the tray, rolling table and work table instead of sinking in or poking into the rim
  • Back after the rain – townsfolk who sheltered from heavy rain come back out soon after it clears, even when just off screen
  • Spray aim – the plant spray mist now lands on the leaves instead of drifting toward the soil

Removed

  • Unused models – old placeholder plant, pot and weed models that never showed in the game are gone

Known issues

  • Starter register – the Basic register sells one strain as grams, eighth bags and pre-rolls; jars, quarters and more strains need the level 8 Shop register
  • Free samples – you can't offer free samples to shoppers in your shop yet
  • Register tiers – the Guide doesn't yet explain which sizes and strains each register sells, so some shopper asks may be confusing
  • Tall plants – very tall plants can still get burnt and push lights out of grow tents
  • Cardboard tent light – a light's recommended height can raise it out of a cardboard box tent
  • Busy plant info – the plant info window is crowded with nutrient details, and nothing points you to the Guide yet
  • Strain looks – not every form of weed (jars, bags, joints, ground or held) shows its strain's look yet, and some icons are generic
  • Police car – the text on the side of the police car reads mirrored
  • Hank's signs – the hanging category signs in Hank's look blurry up close
  • Far display cards – in big stores, display cards past the nearest ten shelves stay blank until you walk closer
  • Store catalog – clicking an item in a clerk's catalog doesn't highlight it in the store yet, and the tooltip promises a location it doesn't show
  • Empty Cup ceremony – the Cannabis Cup ceremony can run with nobody on stage
  • New Game screen – s&box still shows its own New Game screen first; press New Game, then pick seats and who can join in Smog Land's menu
  • Samey crowds – people at events and in the street can still look alike
