Character Editor

An open-source character editor built from an expanded and unified version of Facepunch’s default human models. It’s a tool and a demo rather than a game, made so people can experiment with character creation and use whatever parts they like in their own projects.

Customization

The system combines the existing faces and male and female bodies into one customizable human model. You can blend them together, then fine-tune the result with face and body sliders.

You can also blend individual face regions separately. For example, you might keep your overall face blend but use a different mix for the nose, jaw, eyes, forehead, ears, lips, cheeks, or throat.

There are options for skin textures and colors, hair, makeup, tattoos, and clothing, alongside more exaggerated features like pointed ears and fantasy skin colors. The idea is to show how much range you can get out of the existing human models.

Clothing adapts automatically to your body shape, including clothing originally designed for only one gender. Items with separate male and female versions still support both, and you can choose which version to use.

The editor also includes character randomization, saved presets, and reference-photo fitting. Photo fitting gives you an approximate starting face that you can blend and adjust further by hand.

Using it in your project

The unified character prefab uses the existing human skeleton and is intended to fit into projects using the default animations and character components. It has a custom wardrobe and fitting system to handle clothing across the blended body shapes.

You can use the editor to design characters, export their appearance as JSON, and apply those files through the character component in your own project. You don’t need the full editor just to use the characters you’ve made.

All the code is open source and browsable. Feel free to use this as a reference, take individual features, use the prefab, or make your own editor from it. If your game only needs a few options, you can leave out things like fantasy colors or pointed ears and keep the controls that make sense for you.

Assets and permissions

The original human models, textures, clothing, and other Facepunch assets belong to Facepunch. Most of what you see here comes from those assets, with modifications and some additions. Their existing usage terms still apply.

Anything new I’ve made for this project, including the code and original additions, is free for anyone to use and modify. No credit to me is required.

Facepunch is welcome to use, adapt, or reference any of my work here for the base game too.
